Cathedral Termite Mound at Litchfield NP, Australia

By Isabelle 1 Comment

Cathedral Termite Mound, Litchfield NP, Darwin

This is a Cathedral Termite Mound, found at Litchfield National Park, about 120 km from Darwin in the Northern Territory. It`s home to a colony of grass eating Cathedral Termites, it`s about five meters high and could be over 50 years old. Cathedral Termite Mounds can become as high as nine meters and it`s quite impressive standing beside them. It`s fascinating to see what these little insects can create with soil, sand, saliva, and feces.

It’s amazing! Thanks for sharing it. You’re right, it’s hard to believe little insects can create this!!
