Cayo Levantado Samana Dominican Republic

By Isabelle Leave a Comment

Samana Bay, Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic is one of my favorite islands to visit because of the friendly people and the atmosphere it has. I`ve been here a couple of times (you can read about previous stays in my Dominican Republic travel guide). A while ago I came across this stunning picture of an island in the Dominican Republic I hadn`t seen before and thought: next time I`m going to DR, I want to go there.

Guess what? It was one of the cruise excursions offered on this cruise. So, there was no doubt in this port of call: I wanted to see Cayo Levantado! – I have to say, if it had been here during whale season (January 15 – March 15), I would have definitely done that too, but unfortunately I was there in December… –

Cayo Levantado, Dominican Republic

Cayo Levantado Beach
Cayo Levantado, which measures only one square kilometer, is located in the south of the Samana Bay (Dominican Republic) with one hotel, Hotel Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado. It`s a beautiful island to enjoy the beach and just relax (if you`re not into beach, this isn`t the place for you). It has palm trees, merengue music playing and not to forget rum 🙂

You can sunbath, go for a swim, play some volleyball or dance to the music. Get a massage in the shades, have a cocktail or two 😉

Pina Colada

If you don`t want to have a beach break, you can take a tender to Samana. Some fellow passengers did this and went to look for some of the waterfalls that are to be found in this area.

Another excursion that`s really nice (I`ve done this daytrip at a previous stay) is a visit to Los Haitises National Park, a trip where you make your way through mangroves, visit caves and learn about the history.
Either way, you won`t get bored 😉

To get ashore, the cruise ship offers tenders that go back and forth to Samana, but also to Cayo Levantado during the day. The ship is not docked at a pier here (which can cause a problem for persons with disabilities, check with the cruise lines first).
