When I say Costa Brava, most of you think: beach, sun and sand… But did you know there are over 2500 restaurants at the Costa Brava! And I`m not talking about just any restaurants, I mean high-end gourmet restaurants here. Foodies will feel like they`ve arrived in heaven.
On my recent trip to the Costa Brava, I was privileged to experience a 16 course menu at El Celler de Can Roca, the restaurant that ranks number 2 in the Top 50 World`s best restaurants list. I have to admit, I`d never had 16 courses before but with every dish stimulating my taste buds, it was such a treat.
The restaurant is run by three brothers: Joan Roca, the savory mind, Joseph Roca, the liquid mind and Jordi Roca, the sweet mind.
My favorite dish of all the delights we were presented with was named: Green Colourology. It`s an example of Jordi`s one-color dish.
A collection of eucalyptus ice cream, green apple, lime, Shiso and avocado. Everything green.
If having a delicious lunch at El Celler de Can Roca wasn`t enough to trigger my sense of taste, we visited one of the best chefs in the world, Ferran Adria at El Bulli.
He`s one of the most inspirational men I`ve met. His words like: taking risks, passion for your work and sharing, certainly lingered in my mind. “You have to fall in love with your work, little by little, because too much passion in the beginning doesn’t work.”, he said. Ferran`s dedication to his work as a chef is admirable. In the 25 years he`s been working as a head chef, he hasn`t missed more than 20 days at the restaurant, simply because he says: “It`s people`s dream to come to El Bulli, have a wonderful meal and meet me.” He wants to respect that, so he makes sure he`s there.
Of course just visiting El Bulli without tasting some of the food, wouldn`t make for a very successful visit 🙂 We got to taste a few creations, this was one of them: an air-baguette.
Even though I loved all the Spanish food we had, you could say these two places were the culinary highlight of the trip!
