Nicosia Nostra

By Isabelle Leave a Comment

Tucked away between olive trees and up a hill in Calci, you can find Nicosia Monastery, dating back to 1267.

Unfortunately in the last 40 years, since this monastery was abandoned, a lot of vandalism happened. This is where Nicosia Nostra comes in.

This organisation is a social promotion institution established in 2004 with the goal to keep what`s left of this beautiful building, make people aware of its history. They cleaned clutter and try to put the place in the spotlight as much as possible by having some lovely events here, like readings, live music and probably the most famous event: Festa Camelie, when the camellias bloom.

I selected some of my photos to show you around:

The group who showed us around, made us feel very welcome and after the tour they treated us to some local food, the real Italian way with “pane e vino”.

I think it`s beautiful what these volunteers are achieving here. If you`re in the neighborhood, make sure to pay a visit to this monastery!

A special thank you goes to Avventurosa and Casa Gentili for organising this blog trip.
