Sightseeing in Paris: ‘What to see?’ and ‘Things to do!’

NOTRE-DAME

Cross one of the bridges (Ponts) to get to Île de la Cité to visit the mighty cathedral of Notre-Dame.  This cathedral is an example of early Gothic architecture. A visit to the cathedral itself is free. If you want to climb the tower (387 steps!) the admission is 7.50 euro/adult.

MUSEE D’ORSAY

This used to be a railway station, but in the ’80 it was converted into a museum. The ‘Musée d’Orsay’  is one of the most visited museums in France. Here you can admire art from the 19th century. Most famous is the artwork of the Impressionists (Monet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh).
Opening times: 9.30 AM till 6 PM, till 9.45 PM on Thursdays. Closed on Mondays. Admission: 9.50 euros/adult

CENTRE POMPIDOU

This is a cultural institution where exhibitions, performances and other cultural activities are held. It’s open every day from 11 AM to 10 PM, except Tuesdays and May 1.

QUARTIER LATIN

This neighborhood is known as a district for students. It’s a meeting place for young people from all over the world. Every evening there are activities organized for and by students. For tourists it’s a nice place to find a bistro, café or exotic restaurant. (The Paris-Sorbonne, a well known university is also located here.)

MONTPARNASSE

Here you find Tour Montparnasse,  which is a tower you can visit to have an amazing view over the city. For 10.50 euros you can take an elevator up to the 56th floor of the building. It’s open from 9.30 AM to 11.30 PM (Saturdays till 11 PM).

LA DEFENSE

This is a major business district, where you can find skyscrapers with lots of offices. Also you can admire La Grande Arche, which symbols a window on the world. The tower stands in extension of the Arc de Triomph. Open 7 days a week, admission is 10 euros/adult.

CIMETIERE DU PERE LACHAISE

This is the biggest and most interesting cemetery of Paris because of the famous persons that are buried here. Some of them are Chopin, Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrisson.

MOULIN ROUGE

World famous thanks to its French Cancan, this cabaret welcomes tourists to admire the shows.
