Portuguese phrases for travelers

Here are some Portuguese phrases you can use to communicate during your trip. I got a good tip from Tatiana, who lives in Brazil, telling me there are some differences in European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. So, I added a few Brazilian phrases (BP).

In case of emergency

Help!   ~  Socorro! (so-koh-roe)

Stop!   ~  Páre! (páar)

Call a doctor!  ~  Chame um medico!  (sjaam oeng mè-di-koe)

Call an ambulance!  ~  Chame uma ambulância!  (sjaam oe-mah am-boe-lañsija)

Call the police! ~  Chame a policia!  (sjaam ah po-lie-sija)

The nearest hospital?  ~ Onde é o hospital mais próximo?  (ond’ è oe òsj-pie-tàl maaisj prò-sie-moe)


Useful phrases in Portuguese


Yes/No ~  Sim/Não (sieng/naung)

Please ~  Por favor/Faz favor  (pòr fah-vor/fasj fah-vor)

Thank you ~  Obrigado/da (o-brie-ga-doe/dah)

Excuse me ~  Desculpe (disj-koelp)

Hello ~  Olá (oh-lah)

Goodbye ~  Adeus (a-de-oesj)

How are you? ~  Como está? (koh-moe sjtah?)

Very well, thank you ~  Bem, obrigado/da  (being o-brie-ga-doe/da)

I don’t understand. ~   Não compreendo.  (naung kom-prie-èn-doe)

Do you speak English? ~  Fala inlgês?  (fa-lah ieng-gleesj?)

I’m sorry. ~  Desculpe. (diesj-koelp)


Shopping


How much does this cost? ~  Quanto custa isto?  (kwan-toe koesj-tah isj-toe)

I’m just looking. ~  Estou só a ver obrigado/a.  (sjtoo soh ah veer o-brie-gah-doe/ah)

What time do you open/close? ~  A que horas abre/fecha?  (a ki oh-rasj ah-bre/fè-sjah?)

size, clothes ~  tamanho (tah-man-joe)


Sightseeing


post office ~  correios  (koh-rei-oesj)

bus stop ~  estação de autocarros  (esj-ta-saung d’oh-too-kah-roesj)

BP: ponto de ônibus

railway station ~  estação de comboios (esj-ta-saung de kòm-boi-joesj)

BP: estação de trem

tourist information ~  posto de turismo (posj-toe de toe-riezj-moe)

BP: informações turísticas

 

In a hotel


Do you have any vacant rooms? ~  Tem um quarto livre?  (teing oeng kwar-too lievr)

I have a reservation. ~  Tenho um quarto reservado  (ten-joe oeng kwar-toe re-ser-va-do)

BP: Tenho reservado um quarto.

 

At a restaurant


menu ~  a lista (ah liesj-tah)

BP: cardápio or menu

breakfast ~  pequeno-almoço (pe-kè-noe-al-mò-soe)

BP: café da manhã

lunch ~  almoço (al-mò-soe)

dinner ~  jantar (zjan-taar)

Food: rare, medium, well done ~  mal passado (mahl pah-sah-doe), médio (mè-die-oe)

BP: ao ponto,  bem passado (being pah-sah-doe)

The bill, please ~ A conta por favor/faz favor  (ah kon-tah por fah-vor/faasj fah-vor)
