What to see in Lanzarote?

By Isabelle Leave a Comment

When I booked my flight to Lanzarote, I only knew two things about this place, that it is one of the Spanish Canary Islands and has a volcanic origin. I visited another Canary Island, Fuertaventura, on a prior occasion and remember thinking that the landscape looked dry and didn`t have much of a diverse scenery – in defense of Fuertaventura, this was years ago as a teenager, maybe I wasn’t paying much attention to the scenery back then.

Anyway coming back to Lanzarote, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the island and if you`re thinking of heading there, these are a few stops worthwhile, a personal Top 5!

1. Mirador del Rio

Mirador del Rio Lanzarote

When entering I didn`t really know what to expect, but from a height of about 450 meters you have a breathtaking view towards the archaic island of La Graciosa. This place is one of the locations in Lanzarote that the local artist Cesar Manrique created.

2. National Park Timanfaya

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park or Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is entirely made up of volcanic soil. Access to the park by the public is strictly organized to protect the delicate flora and fauna. After parking your car at the visitors car park, you can witness some of the demonstrations on how hot it really is and then a bus will take you around this unique landscape. This was definitely one of the highlights for me on this trip. Admission: 8 Euro* (Includes bus ride around the National Park)

3. Papagayo Beach

Papagayo Beach Lanzarote

As you know by now, I`m a beach lover, so I couldn`t resist a visit to this hidden beach with crystal blue water. Unfortunately it`s not hidden enough to be deserted, so lots of people there.

4. El Golfo

El Golfo Lanzarote

Quite an interesting place I have to say! There`s a green lake in the middle of a very special scenery in my opinion. A black sandy beach against crater walls that show contrasts of yellow and red.

5. Aboard a submarine

An unusual and unique experience to say the least. Quite surprised by the abundant underwater life you can find beneath the Atlantic Ocean of the Canary Islands.
